Time available for shopping and browsing in GINZA which rivals New York's Fifth Avenue for its variety of department stores and specialty shops. With its neon lights and futuristic skyscrapers, SHINJUKU is how most people picture Tokyo. A lively entertainment center with numerous bars, restaurants, and cinemas. It's also one of the best places in Tokyo to buy cameras. A visit to AKIHABARA offers a wonderful opportunity to buy the latest electronic gadgets at tax-free discounts. Packed with fashionable cafes and trendy boutiques, the SHIBUYA and HARAJUKU areas cater mainly to the young, while on Sundays the youth of Tokyo converge on YOYOGI PARK to dance and listen to live music. After dark, ROPPONGI is the place to be for those of all ages who want to party into the early hours; as night falls the area truly comes to life, with hundreds of bars and clubs that stay open until dawn.

    Morning: Visit Shinsei Bank for economic briefing on the current restructuring efforts underway by the Japanese Banks in an effort to pull Japan out of the recessionary malaise gripping the country.

Afternoon: Visit AIG, a world class multinational, for business briefing on the strategic issues facing the financial services industry in Japan. Also, to understand further why talks ended to buy Hyundai Securities Co. of South Korea amid a bitter dispute over final terms of the $1.5 billion deal.


05 March (Tues.)
    Morning/Afternoon: Visit the Tokyo Stock Exchange to observe the trading of securities conducted on the floor. If time is available, an excursion to the Diet, Japan's parliament, a local museum and the U.S. Embassy's Economic Section.

Evening: Depart Tokyo for Hakone and check-in to the Yunohana Onsen. Hakone is a popular hot-spring resort blessed with some of the finest views of Mt. Fuji, the highest mountain in Japan. It sits at the heart of a National Park area, which includes scenic Lake Ashi and Mt. Komagatake.


06 March (Wed.)
    Morning/Afternoon: Depart Hakone for Kyoto by JR super-express train (Shinkansen). Check-in to the Kyoto Hotel and start tour of Kinkaku-ji Temple, Nijo Castle and Sanjusangen-do Temple. With its long and fascinating history, beautiful gardens, and over 2000 temples and shrines, Kyoto has enough to keep most people enthralled.

Evening: An enchanted evening will be discovered with a visit to the Gion area, where the mystique of the Geishas are on display radiant with their artistic attributes at a traditional tea ceremony or playing classical Edo Period music.


07 March (Thur.)
    Full Day: An excursion to Osaka and Nara visiting Osaka Castle, Kotoku-in Temple with the great image of Buddha and Kasuga Shrine. Both Osaka and Nara are only 40 minutes away, making Kyoto an ideal base for further exploration of Western Japan's economic base and cultural vitality.

Afternoon/Evening: Visit Stanley Market in Kowloon, a favorite shopping center for both locals and visitors. Later, dine on a traditional Chinese "Junk" ship as it sails around the harbor with the majestic city lights illuminating the background.

09-10 March (Sat./Sun.)
    Opportunity for religious observance and optional tours to Hong Kong Island and "Nine Dragons" are available. Other cultural sites include a tram ride to Victoria Peak; tours to local museums; a trip by hydrofoil to Macao, formerly a Portuguese Colony and now renowned for its casinos; and a visit to the Hong Kong Jockey Club to observe Asian horse racing par excellence.

11 March (Mon.)
    Morning/Afternoon: Visit to Mainland Headwear Holdings Limited, engaging in the design and manufacture of quality casual headwear since 1986. A tour of its manufacturing plant in Buji, Shenzhen, PRC, will provide an insight on how headwear products are produced and observe design capabilities and advance machinery. The USA is the major market, while the second largest market is Europe. Among its well-known customers are Walt Disney, Warner Brothers, NBA, NFL, MLB, NCAA, Ferrari, Nike, Manchester United, Reebok, Timberland, Ellesse, Fila and Diadora. Currently, Mainland Headwear produces over 25 million hats per year in more than 5,000 designs, establishing the Group as the global leader in the licensed casual headwear market.

12 March (Tue.)
    Morning: Visit the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and time permitting the Federation of Hong Kong Industries to receive an economic briefing on the commercial sector.

    Morning: Visit to the Shanghai stock Exchange, the second largest in financial transaction volume after Tokyo, to observe trading in both securities and world commodities.

Afternoon/Evening: Visit International Paper Shanghai factory and gain an insight in the production of beverage packaging for both the dairy and juice industry. Attend a traditional Chinese Dinner Show and assimilate local nightlife.


14 March (Thur.)
    Morning/Afternoon: Visits to Unilever and Bao Steel factories to gain insight into China's continued economic growth given its new role as a member of the W.T.O. and the implications regarding trade tariffs. Optional tours available to Jade Buddha Temple and Yu Garden and to Shanghai Museum.

Evening: Group meeting on "reflective journals" and individual perspectives on the academic and cultural components learned from the academic travel trip.
